Ever asked yourself the big questions, “Is there a creator?”, “What is reality?”, “Where did the universe come from?”. Well, countless number of people don’t have the time to devote themselves in finding out the answers to these questions. They go on with their day to day lives, ever forgetting to understand something beautiful, the dynamics of the cosmos. On a good day, if you type in the word ‘cosmology‘ in google, then probably you’ll get more than 11 million results in about 0.35 secs approx. But still most of the people have yet to become ‘not a stranger’ to cosmology. Something which my own experience says, about 70% of the people I made contact with have problems to define cosmology as a branch of science.

The ultimate reason for me to write this post is to help people understand what cosmology actually is. Now, if you guys let me, I’ll delve some more into the subject. According to NASA, the definition of cosmology is “the scientific study of the large scale properties of the universe as a whole.” In layman terms, cosmology is the study of everything involving the origin and evolution of the universe. Many of my friends have problems when asked the difference between astronomy and cosmology. Astronomy, in a broad sense, is the study of heavenly objects and the universe as a whole whereas cosmology is actually a branch of astronomy which is mainly theoretical and deals with ideas behind the origin and the end of the universe, with everything happening in between, in a cosmic scale.

No branch of science can claim to have a bigger area of interest than cosmology, for cosmology is the study of the universe, and the universe by definition contains everything. Because of its profound implications, cosmology had traditionally excited the imaginations of poets, philosophers and religious thinkers.

Cosmology is of two types basically, physical and mythological/metaphysical. The physical cosmology is the scholarly and scientific study of the origin, working and ultimately the fate of the universe, involving scientific procedures to provide conclusions. On the other side, mythological or metaphysical cosmology is the reason behind the birth of religion. The excess curiosity that the human brain couldn’t satisfy with its logical reasoning. It is mainly based on a body of religious and mythological beliefs.

So there, now you know what cosmology is. Congratulations!! Its not that I’m proud of my explaining skills but I think most of you got the gist. For those who still have some problems, you can leave a comment below and I’ll be ready with the solution to your problem as soon as I can. I’ll be coming back with loads of new posts. Stay tuned….
